The first Suburban dates back to the 1930s. One of the oldest in the segment, Chevrolet Suburban still remains a popular full-size SUV in today’s market. It has gone through several changes over the years, and the current lineup belongs to the twelfth generation of this vehicle. For 2023, the lineup will be available in some new exterior color options, there will be a blacked-out grille option for specific trims, and the top trims will enjoy hands-free driving.

In this 2023 Chevrolet Suburban review, we will evaluate this large SUV on its overall performance, engine options, fuel economy, safety and driver-assist features, warranty, and overall value. Read on to find out if this one is a good fit for you.

Pros
Suburban offers a lot of room for passengers and cargo.
With a maximum towing capacity of up to 8,300 pounds, the Suburban is able to handle heavy loads, making it a good choice for those who need to tow a trailer or boat.
Suburban's suspension system provides a smooth and comfortable ride, even on rough roads.
Suburban comes with a variety of advanced safety features, such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.
Cons

Because of its size, the Suburban can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces, such as parking lots or narrow streets.
Despite offering a good value for its price, Suburban is a relatively expensive vehicle, which may put it out of reach for some buyers who are looking for a more affordable SUV.

Performance, Engine, and Comfort

(4/5)

The overall performance of this vehicle is impressive, thanks to its high towing capacity, off-road ability, and clean interior. But it does feel like a truck at times because of its massive dimensions and the lack of advanced comfort features in the cabin.

Engine & Performance

(4/5)

You can choose an engine option based on your personal requirement, after assessing whether you want high power, or you want efficiency. In terms of performance, the Chevy Suburban is a reliable SUV. If you’re interested in hardcore off-roading, you’d love the Z71 trim, which is available with a standard 4WD configuration.

Engine

There are multiple engine options. The base one is a 5.3-liter V8 generating 355 hp. There’s also a 6.2-liter V8 engine with an output of 420 hp. Another option is a 3-liter V6 diesel engine, which generates 277 hp.

Transmission

The engines are paired with 10-speed automatic transmission.

Suspension

It has control arms for front suspension and trailing arms for rear suspension. The vehicle offers smooth rides even in rough roads, thanks to its advanced independent rear suspension.

Steering

Even though steering feedback needs improvement, you can expect good control and balance.

Safety & Reliability

(4/5)

2023 Chevy Suburban received a reliability score of 80/100 from JD Power. Chevrolet offers a lot of safety and driver-assist features as standard, and you also get some latest tech features for towing.

Brakes

The vehicle is equipped with 13.5-inch vented disc for front brakes and 13.6-inch vented disc for rear brakes.

Airbags

When a vehicle meets with an accident, the safety airbags get activated and protect the driver and the occupants from injury. Suburban comes with standard dual front side-mount airbags, head airbags for front, rear, and third row seats, and passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation.

Electronics

Some of the key electronic features include stability control, child safety lock and child seat anchors, accident avoidance system with blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, cruise control, emergency braking assist, 4-wheel ABS, and pre-collision and post-collision safety systems. These are all part of the standard safety suite.

Lights

Daytime running lights, LED headlamp, and dusk sensing headlamps are standard across all trims.

Traction control

Traction control, a feature which helps in preventing slippage of the wheels, is available as a standard feature in this vehicle.

Fuel Economy

(3.5/5)

Just like most other full-size SUVs, Chevrolet Suburban is also quite fuel thirsty, more so when you opt for the high-power engines. Sticking to the diesel variant would be a good option if efficiency is a priority for you.

Engine size

There are 3 engine sizes available—a 5.3-liter V8, 6.2-liter V8, and a 3-liter V6.

Gas per mileage consumption

Models powered by the 5.3-liter engine offer 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. The ones that run on the diesel engine offer 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and it also happens to be the most efficient engine in this lineup.

Interior

(3.5/5)

For the interior, Chevy has prioritized practicality and utility over style. The cabin looks simple, has ample space across three rows, and the cargo area is quite roomy. The automaker uses high-quality materials for trimmings and upholstery, and these elements give the cabin a premium feel. However, it’s not as comfortable as its competitors.

Seats

It has a total seating capacity of 8, spread across three rows. The front seat has 44.5 inches of legroom with 8-way power adjustable and height adjustable driver’s seat and passenger seat. You also get lumbar support for additional comfort. The rear seats have a 42-inch legroom, ensuring the passengers sit comfortably during long rides. The third row is available as a standard addition.

Design

Chevrolet doesn’t focus as much on design and aesthetics as much as it does on practicality. The roomy interior is convenient for long rides, thanks to features like wireless charging and heated seats. The cabin is tasteful, clutter-free, and seamless to navigate.

Infotainment

Suburban not only makes sure that the passengers are comfortable, but also takes care of their in-car entertainment. You get either an 8-inch display or a 10.2-inch display, depending on the trim level you choose. If you want you can also opt for a rear seat entertainment unit. Notable features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 6 speakers, and USB connection.

Overall height and space

The vehicle is 225.7 inches in length and 81.1 inches in width. Its height is 75.7 inches, and the wheelbase is 134.1 inches.

Trunk space

When all the seats are upright, the base cargo space is 41.5 cubic feet, which is quite spacious. If you need more room, folding down the seats will give you a maximum of 144.7 cubic feet.

Price and Extras

(4/5)

The entry-level and mid-range models are value-for-money. If you want more power or you’re purchasing a vehicle solely for off-roading, it makes sense to go for the higher trims, but they will cost you a lot more.

Market Price

You have 6 trim levels to choose from—LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Chevy offers a lot of value no matter which trim level you choose, but if we still have to pick one, it would be either RST or Z71. Both of these are powered by powerful engines, have a rugged appearance, and you also get comfy leather-clad seats. As for RST trim, you can go ahead with the diesel engine, because the rest of the engines are extremely fuel thirsty.

Trim Level Base Price
LS $58,795
LT $64,295
RST $66,895
Z71 $68,895
Premier $72,145
High Country $79,445

AWD/FWD

The vehicle has both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive setup.

Warranty

Chevy Suburban is covered by a basic 3-year or 36,000 miles warranty, a drivetrain warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles, rust warranty of 6 years or 100,000 miles, and roadside assistance of 5 years or 60,000 miles. You also get a complimentary maintenance coverage for the first one year of purchase.

Extras

The towing capacity is massive. The 4WD diesel engine-powered model tows up to 7800 pounds, while the V8 engine-powered model can tow maximum up to 8,100 pounds, when equipped properly.

Verdict

In conclusion, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is a versatile SUV that offers a number of advantages, as well as some drawbacks. Its spacious interior, off-road capability, and rugged image make it a great choice for large families or those who frequently transport cargo. Additionally, the sporty trim options add a touch of fun and excitement to the driving experience. However, its low fuel economy and relatively low comfort level may make it less appealing to some drivers. Now it’s up to you to weigh the pros and cons and decide if the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is worth your money.
