Overview

The first ever Macan came into the market in 2014. It’s not even been a decade since its launch, yet Macan has established itself as one of the most favored small SUVs in the luxury segment.

In this 2023 Porsche Macan review, we’ll dive deep into this crossover SUV’s engine, performance, comfort, fuel economy, pricing, and more, so you can have a transparent idea about whether this is a good purchase for you or not.

Pros
Sporty nature
Excellent driving experience with controlled ride
Reliable engine options
Distinct styling exuding luxury
Cons
Poorly crafted interior
Low cargo space
Lots of interesting features but most of them are available as add-ons

Performance, Engine, and Comfort

(4/5)

As a luxury crossover SUV lineup, Macan has been thoughtfully designed, especially as long as engine and performance are concerned. The interiors could have been better, more so because customers are paying a premium to experience the luxuries. But if you’re willing to skip the few drawbacks, the vehicle actually offers a pretty good deal, with its adequate safety features, hassle-free infotainment system, and sporty fun.

Engine & Performance

(4/5)

If you closely analyze its performance, you cannot help getting reminded of a sports sedan. Why? Because the lineup is not exceptionally quick, but the speed is good enough to pass it off as a vehicle designed for sports car ride lovers. The interior is comfortable enough, but again, there’s nothing remarkable about it, except for the fact that it’s a bit more spacious than a typical sports vehicle, and allows you to enjoy sporty rides with your family on a day to day basis, be it running errands or a weekend long drive.

Engine

Macan is powered by a four-cylinder engine which generates 261 hp @ 6500 rpm and torque of 295 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm. The S model gets a twin-turbocharged V6 engine which is definitely more powerful and quick.

Transmission

The engine is paired with 7-speed dual clutch auto transmission.

Suspension

The lineup gets multilink for front and rear suspension. It also comes with standard four-wheel independent suspension.

Steering

Electric-powered tilt and telescopic steering wheel is a standard feature. Steering is accurate but may not feel as good as the dedicated sports cars from Porsche. You can expect smooth rides on all roads.

Safety & Reliability

(5/5)

JD Power gave the vehicle a reliability score of 83/100. The best part of investing in a premium crossover SUV like this one is its big list of safety features, available across all trim levels. While you can definitely get extra features by paying an additional fee, the basic offerings are quite impressive by themselves.

Brakes

Macan is equipped with a 13.8-inch ventilated disc for front brakes and a 13-inch vented disc for rear brakes. 4-wheel ABS is standard.

Airbags

Dual side-mount airbags for front and rear seats along with head airbags for front and rear seats are available as precautionary measures to keep you safe in case the vehicle meets with a road accident.

Electronics

Porsche has been generous enough to include some of the latest and most sought-after electronic features in this lineup. A few notable ones are child safety lock in the rear doors, emergency braking assist, tire pressure monitoring, lane departure warning, post-collision safety system, and anti-theft alarm, to mention a few.

Lights

As part of the standard setup, you’ll get adaptive headlights, daytime running lights, cornering lights, dusk-sensing headlamps, LED headlamp, as well as self-leveling headlights. Additional features like black LED headlights equipped with PDLS+ and clear LED lights are available for an extra payment of $1040 and $910 respectively.

Traction control

Traction control is a feature which helps the vehicle maintain a stable control while driving in slippery conditions. It’s available as part of the standard suite of offerings in this lineup. It also comes with stability control as standard.

Fuel Economy

(4/5)

Crossovers are small vehicles, so naturally, we want them to have higher fuel economy. Macan’s fuel economy is adequate, but it still leaves us expecting more.

Engine size

The base option is a 2-liter turbo intercooled 16-valve four-cylinder engine, with a 2.9-liter V6 upgrade available for those looking for a more power-packed performance.

Gas per mileage consumption

The Base 2-liter engine is good for 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Models with the V6 engine offer 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

Interior

(3/5)

If you’re here for the luxurious aura of Porsche, the interior will disappoint you big time. To get a cabin draped in premium trimmings for an upscale feel, you’ll have to shell out huge amounts. The space in the rear seats feel a bit cramped, and the cargo space is not that impressive either, even for a crossover.

Seats

In the front, you get bucket front seats, 8-way power-adjusted and height-adjustable driver’s seat, and multiple level heating. As for the rear seats, the legroom may not be as spacious as that of competitor crossovers, but it’s more or less convenient.

Design

The sporty nature heavily influenced its design and aesthetics, and we’re glad it did. Its unique design language screams luxury, boasting a style that you would only associate with Porsche.

Infotainment

While the infotainment system comes packed with features,it’s nothing extraordinary. Noteworthy standard features include a 10.9 inch display, Apple CarPlay, 10 speakers, usb ports, and wifi hotspot.

Overall height and space

This compact luxury SUV is 186.1 inches long, 75.6 inches wide, and 63.8 inches in height. The wheelbase is 110.5 inches.

Trunk space

The base cargo space, when the rear seats are in place, is 17.2 cubic feet. If you fold down the rear seats, it expands to 53 cubic feet.

Price and Extras

(4/5)

The 2023 Macan comes in 3 trim levels—Base, T, and S. Good news is, all trims are well-equipped with the latest tech, comes with an impressive suite of safety features, and boasts a tasteful interior. Additional packages are available for an extra price, in case you want to enhance the luxury experience further. As far as performance is concerned, if you’re looking to make the most of the lineup’s athletic demeanor, the top trim S would be the best pick.

Market Price

For the year 2023, Macan comes in 3 trim levels—Base, T, and S. While the entry-level model does a great job, you may want to go for the higher trims to truly experience the vehicle’s sporty flair and luxurious appeal. If you’re on the lookout for a powerful engine, the best option would be the top trim S, which is powered by a V6 engine.

Trim Level Base Price
Base $58,950
T $64,550
S $69,850

AWD/FWD

Porsche Macan comes with all-wheel drive as a standard feature across all three trim levels.

Warranty

The warranty coverage is adequate, but considering that the vehicle in question is a Porsche, we were certainly expecting something more. Macan comes with a limited warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, along with a powertrain warranty of similar duration. You can avail complimentary maintenance for the first 1 year of purchase, or 10,000 miles. For a luxury SUV, a longer complimentary maintenance and powertrain warranty would have made the deal even sweeter.

Extras

When armed with proper equipment, Macan can tow up to 4409 pounds.

Awards

Porsche Macan has been featured in Car and Driver’s list of top 10 vehicles.

Verdict

Like every other vehicle in the market, the 2023 Porsche Macan has its virtues and vices. But the biggest selling factor of this lineup is its sporty nature, focus on performance, and the very fact that it’s way more capacious and comfortable than a typical sports car. So if you’re a sports car enthusiast and looking for a crossover SUV to take your family for fun rides, this would be a great pick.
