Overview

The best seller from Alfa Romeo, Stelvio entered the SUV market back in 2016. Ever since it was introduced, car fanatics have been going gaga over this Italian beauty, its exceptional design language, and how luxurious the vehicle is.

In this 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio review, we are going to analyze the crossover from multiple angles. You’ll get insights about its engine, trim options, performance, interior, exterior, safety, and so much more. If you’re eyeing a luxury SUV this year, this review will help you decide if this is a good pick for you or not.

Pros
Unmatchable visual appeal makes it stand out in a sea of SUVs
Capable and reliable engine options
You can expect powerful rides on all road conditions
Cons
The rear seats feel somehow cramped
The cargo area could have been bigger
If you take a close look at the interior, not everything is made of premium materials

Performance, Engine, and Comfort

(4.5/5)

While the Alfa Romeo Stelvio lineup is primarily known for its handsome styling and luxury feel, its engine also deserves some attention. As for the interior, the premium seats and in-car entertainment will give you special treatment, and make every ride enjoyable.

Engine & Performance

(4/5)

There’s not much to say about the engine because it’s pretty much a steal, but on the performance front, the lineup could use some improvements.

Engine

The vehicle is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, generating 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a 2.9-liter V-6 engine available, which generates 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque (available for Quadrifoglio). Both engines are capable and extremely powerful.

Transmission

The engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting mode.

Suspension

The lineup gets a four-wheel independent suspension, but it’s not the strongest suit of this lineup. Ride quality feels firm. With Quadrifoglio, you get an independent suspension system that does a decent job at smoothing out road bumps for the passengers, but it could have been better.

Steering

The steering is light and easy to handle, but when you’re shelling out a premium for a crossover, you’d expect more sharpness.

Safety & Reliability

(5/5)

With this luxury SUV, you’ll get plenty of safety and driver-assist tech, which makes it an overall good deal. JD Power gave it a reliability rating of 74/100.

Brakes

As a part of its safety suite, Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers anti-lock brakes (ABS). There’s only one issue with the brakes in general—they are not as consistent as you’d expect them to be, especially at low speeds.

Airbags

The lineup is equipped with front-impact airbags, side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, knee airbags, and pretensioners to keep the driver and the passengers protected in case of a collision.

Electronics

One of the most notable aspects of the vehicle is the availability of a host of standard features. Be it forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, or auto emergency braking, everything comes as standard in this lineup. Other electronic features include stability control, emergency braking assist, dusk-sensing headlamps, and daytime running lights, among others.

Traction control

The lineup is equipped with traction control, making it convenient to drive through slippery road conditions.

Fuel Economy

(4/5)

If fuel economy is your prime concern, you’ll be disappointed with the V-6 engine. The four-cylinder is competent enough in this area, even with all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive models offer the most economy.

Engine size

Under the hood of the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a 2-liter turbocharged and intercooled SOHC engine. There’s also an optional V-6 engine.

Gas per mileage consumption

The rear-wheel drive models offer 22 mpg/29 mpg on city and highway respectively, and 25 mpg combined. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the six-cylinder vehicles offer 17/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined, while the four-cylinder variant is good for 22/28/24 mpg city/highway/combined.

Interior

(4/5)

You cannot call Stelvio’s interior spacious, but for a crossover, it’s good enough. The showstopper is the interior styling and luxurious appeal. Despite the tiny cargo area, there are small storage pockets spread all over, which makes it convenient for long journeys.

Seats

The crossover has two rows, with a capacity of 5 passengers. Both the seats have adequate headroom and legroom, but still the rear seats feel less roomy. The front seats are covered in leather, with an adjustable, 6-way power driver’s seat available. Both the driver’s and passenger seats (on both front and rear rows) have multi-level heating.

Design

The design language of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio screams luxury. Its signature stunning exterior is one of the key selling points of the lineup. If you look at the exterior of the vehicle, the first thing you’ll notice is that it looks nothing like an ordinary SUV.

Infotainment

All trim levels are equipped with an 8.8-inch display, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. While the infotainment system is more or less good enough, there’s nothing remarkable about it.

Overall height and space

The vehicle is 184.6 inches long, 74.9 inches wide, and 66 inches in height. Its passenger volume is 94 cubic feet.

Trunk space

One of the major complaints we have of crossovers is the tiny trunk space, and unfortunately, Alfa Romeo Stelvio falls into the same category. When all the seats are up, there is 18.5 cubic feet available behind the rear seats. And if you fold down the rear seat, the space can be expanded up to 56.5 cubic feet.

Price and Extras

(3.5/5)

The base price of the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is below $50k, but if you pick add-ons, the total cost can be quite high. So it’s better to make a wise choice, and pick a model that offers all the desired features, and also provides the most value for your usage.

Market Price

Alfa Romeo Stelvio is catering to an audience that doesn’t mind paying high for a luxury ride, so there’s not much you can complain about its price point. However, the available trim levels seem limiting, more options would have enabled customers to customize their vehicles.

Trim Level Price
Stelvio $47,145
Ti $52,095
Veloce $53,895
Quadrifoglio $86,575

In the entry-level trim, you are deprived of all-wheel drive, one of the most desirable features in an SUV—but you can get it by paying $2000 extra. And since you’re already bumping up the price, it makes sense to go for the middle trim, as it comes loaded with some interesting features such as a dual-pane sunroof, a convenient navigation system, and a standard all-wheel drive. There are options to make the interior more luxurious and change the colors of the exterior—but they would cost you some extra bucks.

As for the top-spec Quadrifoglio, we can say that we are bowled over by how amazing it is—from engine, performance to build quality, there’s nothing that you won’t like. However, it also comes with a hefty price tag, so it may not be suitable for all buyers.

AWD/FWD

The vehicle comes with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with the latter costing extra if you opt for the base trim.

Warranty

The automaker doesn’t put a lot of effort into sweetening the deal for the customers. Its warranty front is quite basic—you get a limited warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles. The powertrain is covered with a similar 4-year or 50,0000-miles warranty. Free maintenance is available for the first year of purchase or up to 10,000 miles.

Extras

This compact luxury crossover can tow up to 3000 pounds when armed with the right equipment.

Verdict

Despite all its shortcomings, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio steals the heart of luxury SUV enthusiasts with its Italian flair. When budget is not an issue, and you don’t mind the minor flaws here and there, you can rest assured that the Stelvio will be a great ride. But if you’re strictly looking for value and class-leading performance, you might want to look elsewhere.
